Week 2 – Discussion 1
Your initial discussion thread is due on Day 3 (Thursday) and you have until Day 7 (Monday) to respond to your classmates. Your grade will reflect both the quality of your initial post and the depth of your responses. Reference the Discussion Forum Grading Rubric for guidance on how your discussion will be evaluated.
Review who Josue is in Chapter 3 of ELL Shadowing as a Catalyst for Change and imagine that he is your student. Then watch the following video on the power of reading, Dr. Stephen Krashen. Research and consider one or two ideal strategies to help Josue become interested in learning and successful in school.
There are multiple paths to ideal outcomes. However, for all of the times that one approach works well, there are many times when we find that the same approach does not translate for all learners. Therefore, try to understand Josue by filling in the gaps about his family life and school support systems that may already be in place. Share your ideal plan of action for him and explain why you believe this will work. Be sure to cite at least two full-text sources from Ashford University Library, one source must be a research scholarly text or article.
Guided Response: Pick at least two colleagues to engage in further conversation with regarding Josue’s needs and how they can be best addressed. Imagine that the peer whose response you are reading is Josue’s first period (morning) teacher and you are his 6th period (afternoon) teacher. These initial posts are a record of a conversation or email exchange that you had with your colleague about helping him. What do you like about the approach presented by your colleague? Will you support it? How will you offer to enhance it? Remember, as colleagues you will need to be collegial and continue to build a relationship regarding Josue; so how you “say” something is just as important as what you “say” and why you “say” it. You may refer back to your initial post or you may choose to amend your original position for each colleague you respond to, especially if you feel that morning and afternoon needs may be different.
